I have a question regarding TimescaleDB Community Edition license for latest TimescaleDB version 2.18.0.
QUESTION 1
We are one of state owned company that is required that all computer solutions must be installed on-premis, no public cloud. But now we have got a request that our company creates vmware virtual machines and other state owned companies will install all of the software (Linux+PostgreSQL+TimescaleDB) on our hardware but will maintain all of the software by themself. This is kind of infrastructure-as-service solution. Is this allowed by TimescaleDB license?
QUESTION 2
As I understand Community Edition license, we are not permitted to establish database-as-service solution (we should not install vmware_virtual_machine + Linux + PostgreSQL + TimescaleDB) and other state companies to just use database? Like database-as-service solution, is it?
QUESTION 3
If for question 1 or question 2 we are not allowed to use software in this case, can there be some contract signed and/or license purchased, so we are permitted to use it.
I have investigated little bit and found the clearest license explanation to QUESTION 1: “You can install TimescaleDB Community Edition in your own on-premises or cloud infrastructure and run it for free. TimescaleDB Community Edition is completely free if you manage your own service.”
In this case our company is “cloud infrastructure” and our customer is the one that is installing TimescaleDB software and maintaining it by itself.
Generally speaking, we can’t advise whether a Company’s use of TimescaleDB complies with the TSL, because that’s ultimately a question for your legal counsel. Whether or not your proposed use case is allowable will depend on whether it qualifies as a “Value Added Product or Service” as defined in more detail in Section 10 of the TSL. Regardless, our Enterprise Account Execs would be happy to explain the other commercial licensing options that are available to you as an on prem user of TimescaleDB. Please feel free to contact me via message, and I can introduce you to our team.
